For stream fishing, a lightweight reel with a reliable drag system is sufficient. Since the fish are smaller, the reel’s drag may not be heavily tested, but it should still be smooth and dependable. A reel that balances well with a lighter rod is essential to avoid fatigue.

A weight-forward or double-taper floating line is the best choice for stream fishing. These lines are ideal for the delicate presentations needed when fishing in clear, shallow water. A double-taper line offers better accuracy for shorter casts, which is often necessary in tight quarters, while a weight-forward line helps when casting slightly heavier flies or dealing with wind.

In clear streams, a long, fine leader is essential for a natural presentation. A 9-12 foot tapered leader is recommended to prevent spooking fish, especially in slow-moving pools. For tippet, 5X to 6X fluorocarbon is ideal, offering strength and invisibility in the water.

A lightweight, waterproof sling pack or chest pack is ideal for stream fishing, as it keeps gear accessible without restricting movement. Stream anglers often need to carry fly boxes, leaders, tippets, and tools, and a pack with multiple compartments makes organization easy.

Clothing for stream fly fishing should be lightweight, breathable, and functional. Long-sleeve shirts with built-in UV protection are ideal for protection against the sun while keeping you cool. Quick-drying pants or shorts are perfect for wading through shallow waters, and neutral colours like greens and browns help you blend into your surroundings

Wading boots with good grip are essential for fly fishing in South African streams, where slippery rocks and uneven terrain are common. Rubber-soled boots are preferred as they offer excellent traction without spreading invasive species like felt soles.
