The Trip of a Lifetime
Frontier Fly Fishing’s latest Costa Rica Tarpon Fly Fishing expedition delivered exceptional results. Led by Tom Lewin, seven anglers joined the adventure and experienced outstanding sport. Across the trip, the group hooked thirty-one tarpon and landed sixteen, with the largest fish tipping the scales at an impressive 180 pounds. The weather stayed mostly favourable, and the fishing was phenomenal, producing thrilling moments and unforgettable memories.

New Waters, New Species
For the first time, the team explored upstream sections, trading tarpon tides for calmer freshwater pools. These pristine waters held a variety of new species that responded eagerly to shrimp patterns. Between hook-ups, anglers soaked up the scenery — lush jungle backdrops, vibrant birdlife, and crystal water teeming with movement. The trip perfectly combined exploration, learning, and camaraderie, reflecting the true spirit of Costa Rica Tarpon Fly Fishing.

Gear That Did the Work
Tarpon demand dependable tackle, and this trip proved it. Each angler relied on powerful saltwater rods, tropical lines, and robust leaders built for strength and accuracy. Balanced setups turned over large flies with ease, while forgiving tips absorbed hard strikes.
Here’s the gear that performed flawlessly in Costa Rica:
- Sage Salt R8 – precision and lifting power for big fish close to the boat
- Horizon Tactical Saltwater – fast action and accuracy in windy tropical conditions
- Scientific Anglers Sonar Titan GT (Intermediate) – stable turnover and depth control for large flies
- ANDE Monofilament Shock Leader – superb abrasion resistance and knot reliability
The combination of strength, precision, and reliability made this Costa Rica Tarpon Fly Fishing adventure one to remember.
