Smallmouth Yellowfish on the Vaal
Join Frontier Fly Fishing and learn the secrets of fly-fishing for smallmouth yellowfish. Our venue, Wag-‘n-Bietjie Eco Farm, is located three hours from Johannesburg close to the towns of Bothaville and Leeudooringstad in the Northwest province. Wag-‘n-Bietjie is a working cattle farm surrounded by beautiful, natural Free State grasslands and thornbush. The farm is situated in the heart of the Koedoesdraai Conservancy on the banks of the Vaal River.
Guests will have access to more than 15kms of prime Vaal River water to fish, all of which is privately owned and seldom fished. The water is a mix of long glides, deep pools, pocket-water and riffles and can be fished with nymphs under indicators, or with Euro-nymphing techniques.
Frontier Fly Fishing guides will be on hand to assist clients and demonstrate the various techniques and strategies used to target this exciting indigenous species.
Wag ‘n Bietjie is renowned for its good numbers of big smallmouth yellowfish and fish of 10lbs and larger are not uncommon. October and November are the prime months to target the larger yellowfish in the river. During the early season the water is often low and clear enough to sight-fish to the yellowfish.
Guests are accommodated in “Die Plaashuis”, a century-old farmhouse full of character and charmingly appointed with a cozy fireplace, an outside braai facility and a fully equipped kitchen.
Space is limited, so if you’d like to ramp up your smallmouth fishing skills and you fancy fishing a pristine section of the Vaal River that’s renowned for its good number of large fish, book your place now to avoid disappointment.
