Wag-‘n-Bietjie Drift
Smallmouth Yellowfish on the Vaal
Join Frontier Fly Fishing on a three day Vaal River drift, fly fishing for smallmouth yellowfish. Our venue, Wag-‘n-Bietjie Eco Farm, is located three hours from Johannesburg, close to the towns of Bothaville and Leeudooringstad in the Northwest province. Wag-‘n-Bietjie is a working cattle farm surrounded by beautiful Free State grasslands and thornbush. The farm is situated in the heart of the Koedoesdraai Conservancy on the banks of the Vaal River.
Guests will drift approximately 5kms of pristine river each day in inflatable rafts, stopping periodically to wade-fish the choicest spots. The land on both banks is privately owned and this section of the Vaal River is seldom fished. The water is a mix of long glides, deep pools, pocket-water and riffles and can be fished with nymphs under indicators, or with Euro-nymphing techniques.
Guests will drift the river in Ark inflatable boats and Frontier Fly Fishing guides will be on hand to assist and demonstrate the various techniques and strategies that can be used to target smallmouth yellowfish.
Wag-‘n-Bietjie is renowned for its good numbers of large smallmouth yellowfish and fish of 10lbs and larger are not uncommon.
Accommodation is at three different camps located on the banks of the river. The camps are comfortable with clean ablutions and showers and have spectacular views of the river. When we arrive at camp in the evening, beds will be set up, the fire will be lit and upon arrival you’ll be welcomed with an ice cold beverage of your choice!
Every morning, guests’ non-fishing gear will be transported by vehicle to that night’s campsite, so there’s no hassle carrying non-essential gear on the boats.
Space is limited, so if you’d like to ramp up your smallmouth fishing skills and you fancy a drift-fishing experience bar none, book your place now to avoid disappointment.
