Fly Reels

For stream fishing, a lightweight reel with a reliable drag system is sufficient. Since the fish are smaller, the reel’s drag may not be heavily tested, but it should still be smooth and dependable. Fly Lines

A weight-forward or double-taper floating line is the best choice for stream fishing. These lines are ideal for the delicate presentations needed when fishing in clear, shallow water. A double-taper line offers better accuracy for shorter casts, which is often necessary in tight quarters, while a weight-forward line helps when casting slightly heavier flies or dealing with wind. A floating line is versatile and allows for dry fly fishing as well as nymphing in shallow riffles and pools. It’s also easier to mend on the water, which is crucial for controlling your drift in faster currents.

Leaders & Tippet

In clear streams, a long, fine leader is essential for a natural presentation. A 9-12 foot tapered leader is recommended to prevent spooking fish, especially in slow-moving pools. For tippet, 5X to 6X fluorocarbon is ideal, offering strength and invisibility in the water. Fluorocarbon sinks faster than nylon, making it perfect for nymphing, while still being thin enough for delicate dry fly presentations. The thinner tippet also helps avoid drag when casting to fish feeding on the surface. For larger or faster-moving streams, a slightly stronger tippet (4X) can be used to handle more aggressive fish.

Foot Wear
