Highland Lodge, situated between Dordrecht and Molteno in the Eastern Cape, is considered by all of us at Frontier Fly Fishing to be one of the country’s finest stillwater fishing venues. Since it opened its doors to fly-fishermen it has produced more double-figure trout than we care to remember.
We here at Frontier Fly Fishing were the first anglers to fish the clear waters of Highland Lodge back in 2001. We had no idea what to expect when we first arrived on the farm, and the first afternoon that we spent on Bernard’s Lake was an afternoon we will never forget. Both Tom Lewin and Dean Riphagen hooked fish well over double-figures which they never landed. Since then Frontier Fly Fishing has hosted many trips to the wonderful waters on this farm and other waters on the surrounding farms. The nights might be chilly but the fishing is red hot!
The farm owners have placed a limit on the number of anglers who can fish their waters, and slots are limited to seven anglers only, so space is very limited. Highland Lodge offers the angler an exceptional chance of landing a trophy fish and the odds are very good that you will better your personal best trout after a visit to this farm.
Fishermen are accommodated in an old farmhouse within close proximity of the farm owners’ house and the waters. The farmhouse is large and comfortable with DSTV in the lounge and has Wi-Fi connectivity. Meals are cooked in-house by the lodge staff and are excellent. For those wishing to fish close to the lodge, Owl Dam is a minute’s walk from the lodge. There is no chance of overcrowding on the lodge’s waters as anglers have access to several excellent waters including Bernard’s, Syd’s, Greywing, Norman’s and Spurwing, amongst others. A float tube is essential to access the best areas of these waters.
