During May and early June 2022, Frontier Fly Fishing will be running its annual combo trip to Costa Rica and Cuba. For saltwater fly-fishermen who have never done this trip before it is a trip like no other!

The first part of the trip gives anglers the opportunity to tangle with some of the world’s largest tarpon. Our base of operations for the Costa Rican leg of the trip is a small homestyle lodge on the banks of the Rio Colorado on the Atlantic side of Costa Rica. The fishing in the ocean is a mere ten minute boat ride from the lodge and the tarpon fishing is exceptional. Fish average 130lbs with many in the 150lb to 200lb range. The largest fish we have officially measured went 247lbs (198cm fork length and a 140cm girth). We have hooked larger fish but were unable to boat them.

The second phase of this trip embraces the north coast of Cuba. This is an exceptional fishery which we first explored in 2011. This is a sight-fishing flats’ fishery where anglers will encounter tarpon, bonefish and permit. If you’re looking for a Grand Slam then this is a destination to fulfil that dream. Some of the largest Atlantic permit we have ever seen call Cuba’s north coast their home. Accommodation is in a 5-star hotel right near the boat marina. From the marina the closest fishing is a mere ten minute boat ride away. The five skiffs are rotated around the 360 square kilometre fishing area with certain areas rested each day. This means that each skiff has an area of about 50 square kilometres each day to fish.
